New Moon at 17° Libra : Mending the Contract - Saturday 10 October 2026

Eros and Psyche returning from the Underworld
Eros and Psyche returning from the Underworld

There is a particular kind of silence that settles into a relationship when something has quietly stopped working. Nobody slammed a door. Nobody said anything unforgivable. And yet one morning you notice you no longer save the last piece of chocolate for the other person, or you let the phone ring a little longer before you pick up. You can’t quite explain it.

I don’t know why I don’t like it anymore, but I don’t. It just doesn’t feel good for me anymore.

This New Moon in Libra speaks right into that silence.

It doesn’t ask you to fix everything overnight.

It asks you to listen to what has been bubbling underneath, and to be honest about it.

The sign of the scales

Libra is the sign of the other. Where the first six signs build a self, Libra is where that self steps into relationship: partnership, collaboration, teamwork, agreements. Libra wants to know: what is a way forward that works both ways?

That makes this New Moon a natural moment for new initiatives and shared plans: the business partnership, the creative collaboration, the team at work, the friendship that could grow into something more. But Libra is also the sign of contracts and justice. Under its scales, every relationship eventually gets weighed. Are the agreements we made still fair?

Are they equitable?

Do they still seem reasonable?

Are needs being met, on both sides?

This year, the scales are tipping toward that second question.

A New Moon that looks backwards

Normally a New Moon is a fresh start, a seed in dark soil. But every New Moon has a ruler, and the ruler of this one is Venus. Venus is retrograde, and she is in Scorpio, the sign of her detriment.

A planet in detriment is a guest in a house where the furniture doesn’t suit her. Venus loves ease, pleasure, beauty and connection; Scorpio asks for depth, truth and transformation. She can’t simply enjoy herself here. She is distracted from her own business, pulled into deeper water. And retrograde, she turns around and walks back over ground she has already covered.

So instead of what new thing shall I begin?, the question becomes: how can I move forward, given what I haven’t yet dealt with?

Something in the past was neglected, ignored or swept under the carpet. This New Moon brings unfinished business to the surface, so that we can deal with the past and mend something. It is a time for questioning and reflecting before acting.

When a planet in detriment rules a lunation, it is often calling our attention to foundations that have become wobbly. Where do I actually stand in this relationship, this team, this agreement? And how can I secure my position?

The myth: Eros and Psyche

There is an old story that knows this terrain well.

Psyche was a mortal so beautiful that people stopped worshipping Venus and came to admire her instead. Venus, furious, sent her son Eros to make Psyche fall in love. But Eros pricked himself with his own arrow and fell in love with her.

He carried her away to a hidden palace, where he came to her every night in the dark. There was only one condition: she must never look at his face. It was their contract. And for a while, it worked.

But Psyche’s sisters planted a doubt. What if he is a monster? Why else would he hide? One night, Psyche lit an oil lamp and held it over her sleeping husband. She saw not a monster but the most beautiful being she had ever seen. Startled, she let a drop of hot oil fall on his shoulder. Eros woke, saw that the agreement was broken, and flew away.

Notice what the light does here. It reveals the truth, but it also burns. Psyche didn’t break the contract out of cruelty. She broke it because an arrangement built on not-seeing could no longer hold. Some agreements only survive in the dark, and sooner or later we need to see what we are actually in.

What follows is the part that matters most for this New Moon. Psyche doesn’t give up, and she doesn’t simply wait. She goes to Venus herself, the very goddess who wished her harm, and asks how to win back her love. Venus sets her a series of seemingly impossible tasks: sort a mountain of mixed grains before nightfall, gather golden fleece from violent rams, fetch water from a spring guarded by dragons, and finally descend into the underworld to bring back a box of Persephone’s beauty.

Each task is a lesson in discernment, patience and knowing your limits. Psyche learns to sort what belongs together from what doesn’t. She learns to take what she needs without getting trampled. She goes down into the depths, very Scorpio, and comes back changed. In the end, Eros returns, Psyche is made immortal, and their union is renewed on equal terms.

The contract is rewritten, this time with eyes wide open.

This is Venus retrograde in Scorpio: going back, going down, sorting the grains. Not every relationship will be rescued. Some of the grains you sort will tell you it is time to let go. But either way, you’ll be choosing with the lamp lit.

Mars, the necessary surgeon

Shortly after the New Moon, Venus forms an exact square to Mars at 7° Leo, and because Venus rules this lunation, that square colours the next two weeks.

Venus is what we want; Mars is what we are willing to fight for. When they clash, the tension often shows up at a low level: small irritations, a sharp tone, the disagreement over who forgot to take out the bins that is really about something else entirely. Pleasure and partnership can be disrupted. There can be a sense of rupture when our needs aren’t being met.

But Mars in Leo also brings visibility. Leo is the stage, the persona, the mask we wear in front of others. Does that mask still fit comfortably, or does it need adjusting? This might be the moment to drop a piece of it and let your more unique, authentic self be seen. There is a willingness here to fight for what really matters, and that can show up as a difference of opinion in a relationship, or just as easily as a burst of creativity.

Mars can also act as the surgeon. Sometimes healing requires a clean, careful cut. Ask yourself: what do I need to cut away, physically, emotionally or spiritually, so that I can feel good and grow?

Saturn across the scales

Opposite the New Moon, Saturn sits in Aries. Saturn is exalted in Libra, he loves fair rules and clear agreements, but in Aries he is in his fall, impatient and less at ease. Things may move more slowly than you’d like. There may be bigger obstacles in this area of your life than you can currently see, and they may ask for your attention over a longer stretch of time.

Saturn wants to make sure you are living your best life, he simply wants to check if the foundation is solid enough before anything new is built on top of it.

Slow progress, here, is real progress.

Jupiter: something nobler is possible

And then there is the good news. Within about eight hours of the New Moon, the Moon forms a sextile to Jupiter in Leo, and the Sun will complete its own sextile over the following days.

Jupiter in Leo believes that relationships can be better, wiser and more generous than they are. It speaks of integrity and generosity of heart, of the conviction that something bigger and nobler is possible between people. This is growth through teamwork. Jupiter reminds us that honesty doesn’t have to end a connection; often it is exactly what allows it to expand.

How do we stay connected in a time of upheaval?

So how do we handle conflict under this sky? We can start by naming our intentions, out loud, and choosing to collaborate rather than compete. We can let what is bubbling underneath come to the surface, gently, before it erupts.

We can be honest, avoid unnecessary battles, and navigate our differences with the grace Libra is known for.

Not every difference is a threat. Sometimes it is simply two people who have both grown, and whose agreement needs updating.

Where Libra falls in your chart

Read this for your rising sign, or for the house that holds 17° Libra in your natal chart.

1st house – “I am” (Libra rising)

Your gift for sensing what others need is a real talent. It has made you a bridge-builder, a peacemaker, someone people feel safe around. This New Moon invites you to turn that same sensitivity towards yourself. What do you need? What do you prefer, desire, refuse? With Saturn opposite, the people closest to you may become mirrors, showing you the strength and clarity you already carry, even if that isn’t always comfortable to see. Venus retrograde in your 2nd house lets you rediscover your worth from the inside out, independent of anyone’s approval. That takes practice rather than a single insight. Like Psyche lifting her lamp, you are ready to see yourself clearly. This is a good moment to renew the most important contract of all: the one with yourself.

2nd house – “I have” (Virgo rising)

Your talents, your values and your sense of self-worth are your truest wealth, and this New Moon shines a light on them. It’s a good time to look at what you own and what you value with fresh eyes. Which possessions, habits and beliefs still reflect who you are today, and which belong to an earlier chapter? Venus retrograde in your 3rd house may bring back old words about money and deserving, giving you the chance to rewrite them in your own voice. Saturn in your 8th house helps you make shared arrangements clear and fair, even if those conversations feel a little awkward. Like Psyche sorting the grains, you are learning to keep what nourishes you and gently release the rest. From that clarity, a steadier sense of abundance can grow.

3rd house – “I perceive” (Leo rising)

You have a real ability to see, name and connect, and this New Moon invites you to refresh that gift. Our perception of others is often coloured by old experiences; now you have the chance to meet the people around you as they are today. That sibling, neighbour or colleague may surprise you once you look again. Venus retrograde in your 4th house connects this to your roots: you can honour the way you learned to communicate at home, and consciously choose what you want to keep. Mars in your 1st house gives you the courage to speak up. Paired with curiosity and listening, your words can become a bridge. Not every conversation will go smoothly, but one honest, kind exchange now can open doors that have long been closed.

4th house – “I look back” (Cancer rising)

Every family passes something on: strengths, traditions, roles, unspoken agreements. Perhaps you were the caretaker, the peacemaker, the strong one at the table. Those roles helped you and your family through life, and they deserve recognition. This New Moon gives you the chance to review them with loving, adult eyes and to choose which you still want to carry. Old patterns rarely change overnight, yet even a small inner shift can bring real relief. Venus retrograde in your 5th house reconnects you with the joy and spontaneity that may have been set aside along the way. Saturn at the top of your chart shows that every step you take to strengthen your roots will support everything you build in the world. You can honour where you come from and still choose your own way forward.

5th house – “I create” (Gemini rising)

Your creativity, your playfulness and your capacity to love are precious, and this New Moon invites you to welcome them back to the centre of your life. Which hobby, project or passion has been waiting patiently for you? Which love would like more lightness and laughter? Venus retrograde in your 6th house helps you find a better balance between duty and delight, so that joy no longer has to wait until everything else is done. Mars in your 3rd house gives you the courage to say out loud what you long for. Jupiter adds a blessing: your joy is not a luxury, it is a source of strength. Reclaiming it may feel a little clumsy at first, and that’s fine. Give your inner child permission to play again, and see what grows.

6th house – “I serve” (Taurus rising)

Your dedication and willingness to help are fine qualities, and others feel their warmth. This New Moon invites you to include yourself in that care. What would your daily rhythm look like if your own wellbeing had a firm place in it? Your body is a wise companion; listen to its signals with kindness and curiosity. Venus retrograde in your 7th house gives you the chance to bring a key relationship, at work or at home, into a more balanced exchange of giving and receiving. Saturn in your 12th helps you release old patterns of over-responsibility. A new boundary may surprise someone at first. When you take good care of yourself, though, your service flows from abundance instead of effort, and that benefits everyone around you.

7th house – “I balance” (Aries rising)

Relationships are powerful mirrors, and this New Moon places that mirror right in front of you. The qualities you admire in others, their confidence, their warmth, their boldness, often reflect qualities you are ready to claim for yourself. With Saturn on your Ascendant, you are growing into a strong, centred presence, able to hold your own while staying open to the other. Venus retrograde in your 8th house invites deep, honest conversations about trust and closeness. They won’t always be easy, but they can bring a relationship to a richer level. Like Psyche and Eros, you have the opportunity to renew an agreement with open eyes, as equals. Balance isn’t sameness; it’s two whole people choosing each other, freely and consciously.

8th house – “I transform” (Pisces rising)

You have a deep capacity for intimacy, trust and transformation, and this New Moon invites you to explore it. It’s a good moment to look honestly at what you give and receive in your closest bonds, emotionally, financially and energetically. When expectations become clear and spoken, closeness becomes freer. Venus retrograde in your 9th house helps you refine your beliefs about love and loyalty, making them truly your own. Mars in your 6th house reminds you to listen to your body as you process. This is Psyche’s descent into the underworld: a journey that asks for courage and leads to renewal. Whatever you consciously release now, an old resentment, an outworn attachment, makes room for a deeper, more nourishing connection.

9th house – “I understand” (Aquarius rising)

Your search for meaning, wisdom and truth is one of your great strengths. This New Moon invites you to recognise how far your understanding has already grown, and to consider which beliefs are ready to expand further. You may notice that your own inner knowing has become a trustworthy guide, alongside the teachers and traditions you’ve learned from. Venus retrograde at the top of your chart may bring back a mentor or professional ideal, offering you the chance to integrate their wisdom in your own way. Mars and Jupiter in your 7th house make dialogue your best teacher right now. A partner’s questions may challenge you, and that is exactly where the growth lies. Wisdom grows through openness, and you are ready for the next chapter.

10th house – “I achieve” (Capricorn rising)

Your ambition and your sense of responsibility have brought you far, and this New Moon invites you to reflect on what you truly want your work in the world to express. Does your career still match the person you’ve become? Which goals feel genuinely yours, filled with meaning and joy? These are not always comfortable questions, but they are fruitful ones. Saturn in your 4th house shows that inner stability is your foundation: the more you feel at home in yourself, the more steadily you can stand in the world. Venus retrograde in your 11th house may reconnect you with a former colleague or network, bringing new opportunities from familiar faces. This is your moment to align success with integrity, step by deliberate step.

11th house – “I hope” (Sagittarius rising)

Your friendships and communities reflect your hopes for the future, and this New Moon invites you to appreciate the people who truly lift you up. Which connections inspire you, energise you, make you feel more yourself? Those are the ones to nurture now. Some connections may also gently loosen, and that is part of growing too. Venus retrograde in your 12th house brings a healing touch to old friendships or dreams that once faded, allowing you to honour what they gave you and make peace with how they ended. Jupiter and Mars in your 9th house encourage you to seek like-minded souls who share your vision and values. Your authentic voice is a gift to every group you belong to. The future is waiting for you to dream it boldly.

12th house – “I believe” (Scorpio rising)

For you, this New Moon unfolds in the inner world of dreams, intuition and spirit, a place where you naturally feel at home. With Venus retrograde in your 1st house, whatever rises from the depths will help you feel more like yourself. Old memories, emotions or patterns may surface, not to burden you, but to be released. You don’t have to resolve everything at once; give it time. Pay attention to your dreams, synchronicities and quiet moments; they carry meaningful messages now. Mars at the top of your chart gives you the energy to act in the world, yet your real strength lies in trust and surrender. Like Psyche returning from the underworld with Persephone’s box, you carry a treasure back into the light: a renewed, clearer you.

Questions for this New Moon

Light a candle, or an oil lamp if you have one, and sit with these:

  • What do I need to remove from my life to have more pleasure in it?

  • Which agreements in my life are no longer fair, and to whom?

  • What has been bubbling underneath that I haven’t yet dared to say?

  • Am I keeping the peace, or am I keeping myself small?

  • What unfinished business from the past is asking to be mended, or released?

  • Which part of my mask am I ready to set down?

  • If my relationships could be nobler and more generous, what would be the first small step?

Like Psyche, you don’t have to sort all the grains tonight. You only have to begin, with your eyes open.
